Be a Man, Man

Something you should know about me: I love advertising. I think that's where the most creative minds of our time work. Especially for the NBA. I mean, comedians all have warm-up acts to get the crowd in a giggly mood but commercial can have me belly laughing within seconds. And maybe I should be embarrassed to admit this, but I still get choked up when I tell people about this Hallmark commercial I saw years ago with the little girl figure skater. I don't cry for months at a time but in 30 seconds I had tears streaming down. WOW. Just wow.

Lately I've really been digging this "be a man" trend happening in advertising. Not that the men in my life aren't adequate men, or that a commercial would change that, it's just amusing. I know, I know... it get dicey when you take media messages to serious. Women have known the impact of advertising for years which can be negative in a lot of ways... my blonde eyelashes need layers of the best mascara that thickens, lengthens & curls or I'm just completely inadequate as a woman. Well that's lies. And I don't wish those kind of messages on my men. But here's something I really enjoyed:

Once upon a time, men wore the pants, and wore them well. Women rarely had to open doors and little old ladies never crossed the street alone. Men took charge because that’s what they did. But somewhere along the way, the world decided it no longer needed men. Disco by disco, latte by foamy non-fat latte, men were stripped of their khakis and left stranded on the road between boyhood and androgyny. But today, there are questions our genderless society has no answers for. The world sits idly by as cities crumble, children misbehave and those little old ladies remain on one side of the street. For the first time since bad guys, we need heroes. We need grown-ups. We need men to put down the plastic fork, step away from the salad bar and untie the world from the tracks of complacency. It’s time to get your hands dirty. It’s time to answer the call of manhood. It’s time to WEAR THE PANTS.

Will wearing Dockers make you a man? haha No. But I'm kind of digging the thought that men aren't measured by the number of ladies they can get, beers they can chug, or touchdowns they can run. What a novel idea. I don't actually know what makes a man... I guess I'm more qualified to talk to the ladies, so I won't even try to answer that. You're on your own!

Also I like this, but only for the laughs... & I would like 2 tickets to that thing I like.

  1. It's an interesting tactic, isn't it? It seems like people watched what Axe was doing and then decided to put their own spin on it! I've been watching this with a lot of interest too, there were some (dodge?) commercials during the superbowl that were along this line that were pretty intense!

  2. I like the marketing technique of making fun of your own marketing technique. The Old Spice commercials crack me up.
